We set off for Uffington to have a look at the most famous and earliest white
horse in the area.
Uffington white horse is a strange phenomenon and cannot be fully seen except from the air.
This could either be due to some truth in the belief about alien intervention... or could
explain why it doesn't much resemble a horse...
We walked through the next field taking care not to disturb the walking
woolly jumper inhabitants. |

This is the best viewpoint! A family stopped us a little later and asked
where they could see the horse from. I pointed up. Without some form of aircraft the
horse, or dragon as some think, cannot be fully seen.
Seen close up, the natural contours of the hill still prevent the full
animal to be seen. It is a loose,
free-flowing stylised beast, like a cartoon representation drawn to suggest speed and grace. |

Below the horse is a small square hill with a white spot (left). Legend has it that
here St George slew the dragon and that where the dragon's blood flowed into the ground,
the grass cannot grow. |

Above and in front of the horse is Uffington Castle, an Iron Age hillfort.
The huge defensive ditch and ramparts can still impress and we walked a ciruit of the ramparts. |
