Avebury, aound 6:30pm and we decide to walk around the perimeter of the henge.
The local farmer must have let his flock onto the field containing the inner ring of stones
and they were moving steadily along, cropping the grass and keeping wary eyes on the visitors who
still thronged around the stones. |

They looked like a flock of Dougal dogs from the Magic Roundabout... (If that doesn't date
me I don't know what would...) For any non-Europeans, the Magic Roundabout was a children's TV
programme in the late 1960s and early 1970s and if you've not seen it you missed out!
As I edit this in 2003 there's talk of a new film - it won't be a patch on the TV series. |

With the sun low in the sky, the earthworks show their contours and their vast
size in this photograph.
It took us a while to walk all the way around the circle, crossing the road a couple of times
as we went around. By the time we reached our starting point I was beginning to think fondly of
a plate containing something substantial! |

However when we finished the circle and got back to the pub it was still crammed full and with an hour's wait for a table. |

We decided to try somewhere else. Luckily the ice cream van had departed before we made our way back to the car park... We were getting desperate! |
